You can breathe, so you can do yoga. You don’t touch your toes (most people here don’t) and you definitely don’t stand on one leg like a flamingo on caffeine.
You roll out a mat, you notice your breath, you move in a way that feels good. Yoga is simply you spending time with your body, right now, without the pressure to nail a pose or look a certain way. Still not sure where to start? We’ve gathered what we think some useful information below. Scroll and enjoy!
What is yoga?
Yoga is a system of philosophy, the practice of conscious connection and an embodied state of living.
Yoga derives from the root word “yug” or “yuj”. The sanskrit word for “yoke” as in to unite or connect an ox to a cart or a horse to a chariot.
Understanding yoga styles
Vinyasa
Great for building strength and providing your body with a physical practice to help calm the busyness of the mind.
Hatha
A physical practice that benefits both body and mind! In Hatha yoga, you hold each pose a little longer than in styles like Vinyasa yoga, which can be especially helpful if you’re new to yoga.
Yin
This practice is the opposite of Yang and a great complement to our typically busy society. It allows you to dive deep into your body’s tissues and into stillness.
Restorative
You stay in each pose for a longer time (up to 20 minutes), and this practice invites you to experience mindful rest and connect with the non-physical layers of your being.
